Can’t get enough of The Ancient Magus’ Bride? Our red-haired melancholic teenage girl and elk-headed magician make a comeback this September, and many were thrilled since it was announced last March. However, most fans were surprised as they expected a Season 2 series and not OVA. Now that the OVA is released, everyone is wondering if the studio plans to make a move for the production of The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride is a dark fantasy, Supernatural Japanese anime series, written & illustrated by Kore Yamazaki. Wit Studio produced the prequel and anime television series, but now has passed the torch to a newly established studio named  Studio KAFKA for the OVA trilogy, this is because Wit is busy with other projects already.

We know that three-episode OVA won’t satisfy fans for long and everyone’s waiting for the news of a longer series adaptation. So, without further ado, here is Everything we know so far about The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2.

It’s been a while since the last season of The Ancient Magus’ Bride aired and you’re probably in need of a refresher course from the recent events where they left off.

Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered, so here’s what happened last:

We follow the life of Chise Hatori living together with Elias Ainsworth, a magician, Chise’s master, and fiance. Chise finds out that she is a Sleigh Beggy and with a short lifespan of three years, but Elias promises to help cure her illness and thus teaches her magic. The situation becomes complicated when they encounter Cartaphilius, the cursed immortal performing gruesome experiments collecting both the creatures, fae, and human parts in aiming to create a body that will neither die nor decay for the purpose that he can finally die.

In the concluding episode, Chise faces Cartaphilius and both argue about each suffering. Then, Ashen eye comes in and defends Cartiphilius. At the same time, Elias, Ruth, and the wind fairy arrive to save Chise. Ashen Eye and Cartaphilius flee to escape but are stopped by Elias and Aerial.

Chise appeases Cartaphilius’ suffering and sings a lullaby (a sleep spell), but she gets stabbed. She succeeds when calling out for Elias as they initially formed a bond prior. Elias carries her and returns home, while recovering, Chise dreams of Cartaphilius, tells her that he will keep her alive by fighting her curse. When she wakes up, she forgives Elias for what he has done and talks about the future.

Life comes back to normal and checks on Cartaphilius, who’s now confined to a location where he sleeps peacefully. Ashen Eye shows up and expresses disappointment in the situation. Chise visits Angelica and Stella, who both give her a gift.

In the last scene, Elias finds Chise wearing a wedding dress with a veil in the forest. She gives him a ring to help find each other and makes a vow to stay together and understand each other.

What is going on with Studio Kafka?

Last March, Wit Studio entrusted Studio KAFKA with the production for The Ancient Magus’ Bride OAD or also called, ‘The Ancient Magus’ Bride OVA: The Boy from the west and Knight of the Mountain Haze’. The studio partnered with producer Twin Engine Inc. and sets to release the title: ‘Mahoutsukai no Yome: Nishi no Shounen to Seitan no Kishi’, a 3 episode OVA. The OAD bundles a special edition of Manga 16-18, the 16th releases this September 10, 2021. Volume 17 releases on March 10, 2022, and Volume 18 is set on September 10, 2022.

Now, I know by the time you read this blog you’ve probably seen the newly released OAD and after you’ve seen the trilogy, you’re going to wonder about Season 2. Well, I say not to worry as according to an interview from a founding member of the studio, Mr. Terasawa:

“We want the viewers to remember the story after three years, he did not want to bombard with a brand new version and wants to build up excitement by remembering the first season.”

What does this mean for us? Why do they not want us to forget? Oh! It is like they are giving hints that we take on a refresher course because this is only the beginning of the production of Season 2?

At the moment, Studio Kafka has posted mostly about the OVA trilogy. There are currently no official announcements for the renewal of the second season, but we see that the staff hints that this would only be a possible start of the anime series. Releasing the three-part OVA seems to be a perfect move to check if people are still interested, if it does, they may proceed to produce Season 2.

We’ll see some results from the popularity rankings later and then check some other factors that increase the chances of getting another season.

Before the new OVA is released, fans all over the world are rewatching, reviewing the first season and the former OVA. They couldn’t contain their emotions and tweeted about how excited they were to finally watch new episodes, they flooded the feed with screenshots and gifs from the first season.

@BON tweets, he hopes to proceed on to Season 2. I guess he has also watched the last season and is ready for another one?

However, there is confusion going on at forums. If there would be a new season and not the OVA.

If some people ask if there is any word for season 2, the thread on Reddit is answered with a forum FAQ that states from the interview with president and CEO, Taketsugu Wada contended that “for me, I really want to continue Mahoyome.”

Will there be a The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2?

We will come to some details if Season 2 is possible to come into production. The Ancient Magus’ Bride is written and drawn by Kore Yamazaki and has completed 15 tankobon volumes, the 16th release September 16, 2021. So by the time you read this, there will be 16 tankobon volumes.

The main question is, is there enough resource material for Season 2? Basically, the total manga volume is now on the 18th but 16, 17, and 18th are ongoing releases. The Anime adapts 9 Volumes of Manga (up to Chapter 35), so there are now 9 volumes ( from volume 10 – 18, 45 chapters already!), the material is more than enough, and that is ready to be adapted for Season 2!

How about the sales? Volume 2 of the manga reached the ninth place on the Oricon weekly manga chart and had sold a total of 104, 518 copies, by June 2015 the series sold half a million, over three million by September 2016, and five million copies by 2017 December.

The latest stats are for the 15th volume, which has sold 79, 120 volume in the sales record of March 2021. With these figures, it seems that the studio won’t have any issues regarding the funding.

What a surge of Popularity from Google Trends data that spans Sept 2020 to Sept 2021, the most prominent is March, which is when the OAD was announced and another before the release of the OVA.

Now, we all see are green light then it means that there will be Season 2 now? Let’s check the studio’s plans!

When will the Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 be released?

As for the release of Season 2, there is currently no official statement by the studio yet. Even on their Twitter or website, it has always been at the back of our minds that they would be observing the results in sales or interest of their new release OVA. Besides, Wada did say they want the series to continue, we definitely couldn’t agree more with what he said.

Do you think the studio might be poking with a stick and just observing if people are still interested in ‘he Ancient Magus’ Bride?

Analyzing the release pattern from the last sequels and series adaptations, the three-part sequel was announced and aired in 2016-2017. The anime announcement television series adaptation followed a year after, 2017.

So, would they be following the same pattern as they had before IF ‘The Boy from the west and the knight of the mountain Haze’ gets a really good reception? For us, we see no reason why they won’t and if they do, we can expect the Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 to be announced by the next year, 2022, or the following year.

So you’re really curious what will happen in the anime next. Then, if you still remember the last series, Chise might have defeated Cartaphilus but remember that Ashen Eye is just around the corner and the Dragon’s Curse gives an uncertainty of when she will die. Elias is eager to find a solution for this curse but at the moment, Chise learns to accept this fate and decides to live her life to the fullest.

Chise accepts the alchemists’ suggestion to attend college as an auditing student (besides the fact that they want to study her since she is a Sleigh Beggy slash with Dragon’s curse and one of immortality. Chise and Elias meet the headmistress and magecraft professor, Liza Quillain.

It’s revealed that Sleigh Beggys are more common than natural magi, they are usually physically weak and are often used as batteries for wizardry. However, with Chise’s unique disposition, she becomes a special case and this research might help her with the curse. From this point on, she decides to go for it and a new adventure unveils for our Chise.

Anime spectators will deluge in new characters, Chise learns to adjust to her college slash dorm life. She will meet new teachers and Elias will become his magecraft professor! Cartaphilus will sometimes visit her, looking for a reply to his question. It will also be revealed that the curse will not stop even though the eye is removed from her.

Moreso, the college mostly has human students with desires to become a wizard or mage this will pose as a challenge for Chise since they can determine her a Sleigh Beggy. Although it doesn’t seem to be a problem especially when she meets with the staff like their Dorm Mothers (cats) and the medical quarters’ head (Muryans – shapeshifters).

So, It’s going to be such a flavorful season and we hope to hear the good news soon. We know deep in our hearts that the newly established Studio is there for us to enjoy more of our Mythologic romance series so we’re expecting!
